He creates a crooked businessman who's so assured in his string-pulling that he isn't afraid to appear weaker or less sexually charismatic than the race-car driver he needs to pull off a big job (John Cassavetes). Reagan is creepily good in it as an undiluted bad guy with a voluptuous moll (Angie Dickinson). The sole milestone picture he made afterward was Don Siegel's free adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's The Killers (1964), and it was a milestone in reverse - filmed as one of the first made-for-TV movies, it entered theaters because it was too violent for broadcast. When he returned to Hollywood, he poured his energy into union activity (he was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952, and again for a year in 1959) and broader political work. Wartime service making Army Air Corps training films interrupted Reagan's acting career at this peak of acceptance and accomplishment. When Drake learns that a doctor cut off his legs to punish him for once pursuing the doctor's daughter, he responds, "Where did think I lived, in my legs? Did he think those things were Drake McHugh?" Reagan's robust resurgence still rouses cheers at every screening.

#Million dollar baby 1941 movie
Reagan expresses the generosity and kindness behind the man's high spirits and flirtatiousness, and the steel of his belief in his closest friend (Robert Cummings).Īnd despite Drake's deep love for his wrong-side-of-the-tracks wife (Ann Sheridan) and her family, Reagan doesn't underplay his disappointment with the distance he travels down in life after a bank officer makes off with his funds.Īmazingly, Reagan brings such truth and gusto to the movie that he turns its preposterous climax into a personal triumph.

In Kings Row, it's great to see Reagan play the cock of the walk with so little angst or insecurity.
